The Knot Untied

“My world becomes very still and spacious when I read these poems, Patrice—every crack fills with light, every breath a leaf or feather floating in the wind. Her poems have the ability to inspire and open up our own worlds.
A gift beyond measure.”
—ALISA FINEMAN, SINGER-SONGWRITER

“Patrice’s poems read like narratives that awaken your sense of love, loss and wonderment. I find them to be written in a way that speaks to everyone.”
—PAM CARROLL, ARTIST

“The images are thoughtful and evocative, and so personal in Patrice Vecchione’s poems. I shared her vivid feelings, yet saw my own reflection.”

DISPEL FEAR AND HESITATION

The fire alarm of desire, I want to pull it,
drive the engine through town—
down back alleys, up billboard boulevards,
past yards where laundry waves crisply on the line.
With a bullhorn to my lips, I’ll proclaim the moment.
All the yeses stored up for another day
I’ll unleash like dogs.

Calling housewives and plumbers, hairdressers and accountants,
children with their bouncy balls, railroad men and miners:
flee whatever closed place locks you in.
Come out here, into the heat of the afternoon.
The confetti of peach blossoms and dandelion
floats my name next to yours, your name next to hers,
igniting desire throughout the town.
